He did, in fact, assemble this kit, more or less as published here. While these kits were designed for an earthquake senario, they are just about equally applicable to any widespread natural or man made disaster. 24 2012-02-13 01:00:00 MRE INFO http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/71 http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/71 This site is all about U.S. military operational rations both current and from the recent past. It is a simple procedure that applies heat to food in a closed glass jar to interrupt the natural decaying that would otherwise take place. The air we breathe and all foods in their natural state contain microorganisms, such as molds, yeasts, bacteria and enzymes. Food spoils when these factors are not controlled. Proper, safe home canning procedures control the growth of spoilage microorganisms allowing us to keep food beyond its normal storage period. 71 2012-02-10 01:00:00 The National Center for Home Food Preservation http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/71 http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/71 The National Center for Home Food Preservation is your source for current researchbased recommendations for most methods of home food preservation. Everything you read in this work revolves around this central question. The length of time a particular food will remain palatable and nutritious in storage determines its usefulness for our purposes. The fact of the matter is that there are few hard and clear answers. As a result it is not uncommon to find two or more sources that purport to know, but give conflicting advice. The following will hopefully cut through some of the fog. 71 2012-02-08 01:00:00 Make your own biofuel http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/48 http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/48 What you need, what to do, how to do it, everything you need to know stepbystep instructions for making highquality biodiesel fuel, from novice to advanced level 48 2012-02-07 01:00:00 The Path to Prosperity http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/29 http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/29 Representative Paul Ryan's Prepared Remarks at AEI Event 29 2012-02-06 01:00:00 Peak Oil and Libya http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/48 http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/48 There is no extra oil. Hardwoods have less resin and burn slower and longer. Softwoods burn quickly. In addition the seasoned length influences on the fuel efficiency. Seasoning the wood refers to the allowed drying time before combustion. Wood need to be dried at least 4 to 6 months before use. 10 2012-01-27 01:00:00 USMC Common Skills PDF part 2 http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/33 http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/33 Marine Corps Common Skills Handbooks 1A and 1B must be ordered through the Marine Corps Publication Distribution System MCPDS Albany, Georgia. The idea was to make a device that would flash a little red light if a nuclear attack were underway or if there were some sort of massive radiation spill right outside the house. It would be like a rain detector built into an umbrella, perfectly functional but totally useless. The sensitivity would be on the order of those "survey meters" you often see on eBay with scales from 0.5 to 500 r/hour. If the meter ever moves on one of these, you have a problem They should probably be calibrated in "hours left to live" I decided that a small ion chamber with a Darlington transistor current amplifier would serve as the detector. 31 2012-01-22 01:00:00 How to Make a Radiation Detector http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/31 http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/31 Geiger Counter is a device that can detect radiation. Since this device used very high voltage the output to the USB is optoisolated to protect the delicate low voltage computer circuitry. 31 2012-01-18 01:00:00 Homemade Geiger Counter Youtube Video http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/31 http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/31 Just a basic geiger counter I made. The boost converter is just based off the topology from the Wikipedia article, made of a 600v 2A MOSFET, 600v 1A diode, 100mH inductor, and the switching signal is coming from an ATtiny13, at about 99.2 duty cycle and 2500Hz. This provides the 470vdc needed for the geiger tube from as low as about 3vdc. The voltage output is regulated by 5 100v zener diodes in series, and is fed through a 10M current limiting resistor to the anode of the geiger tube, and the cathode connects to ground through a 470k resistor. The signal is pulled at the junction of the cathode and 470k resistor, and is a 9v exponentially decreasing signal that lasts 300uS. This signal is directly fed to the gate of a MOSFET, which allows current to flow through a speaker, causing the audible clicks. The radiation source is the tiny dot of Americium 241 found in ionizing smoke detectors. The geiger tube was purchased from Electronics Goldmine for 35, and I'd guess that collectively the other parts cost around 10 total. Most of the information I needed came from here: http://www.imagesco.com/articles/geiger/02.html and several sites for the boost converter. 31 2012-01-17 01:00:00 Sunelco http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/17 http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/17 We want our customers to get a Renewable Energy System built just for them. With great thanks to David Frith and Steve Tootell, the kiln shed was built, the floor was beautifully flat and level, and all the building materials were on site ready. The only foundations that needed to be finished were under the chimney, and Daniel, Nicola and I finished that off first thing on the first day, so that the chimney could be started on day two. 15 2012-01-06 01:00:00 Make your own glazes http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/15 http://links.wolfeblog.net/links/15 Have you ever come up with a good idea while working with your handmade pottery or ceramics and thought that you would like to share it with others You have Well, why not send it to us and we will add it to the tips page for all to see.
